Hi Dale; Maybe this will help, from owners manual.

BREAK-IN
The first 800 km (500 miles) is the most important in the life of your motorcycle. Proper operation during this break-in period will
help assure maximum life and performance from your new motorcycle. The following guidelines explain proper break-in
procedures.

MAXIMUM ENGINE SPEED RECOMMENDATION
The maximum engine speed during break-in should be kept lower than after break-in. Since this model is not equipped with a
tachometer, the following table is provided to show the vehicle speed in each gear that corresponds to the maximum recommended
engine speed.
Initial Up to Over
800km 1600km 1600km
(5OO miles)(1000 miles) (1000 miles)
Maximum 4000 5000 6500
recommended r/min r/min r/min
engine speed

Corresponding vehicle speed
1st km/h 35 45 60
miles/h 20 25 35

2nd km/h 50 65 85
Miles/h 30 40 55

km/h 75 90 120
3rd Miles/h 45 55 75

km/h 90 110 140
4th Miles/h 55 70 90

km/h 95 120 155
Top Miles/h 60 75 100

VARY THE ENGINE SPEED
Vary the engine speed during the break-in period. This allows the parts to “load” (aiding the mating process) and then 0unload’
(allowing the parts to cool). Although it is essential to place some stress on the engine components during break-in, you must be
careful not to load the engine too much.

This is word for word from the owners book.
One thing I found helpful in shifting is to downshift as you slow down, that way you are always in the appropriate gear, ready to pull out.
The Savage gearbox does not lend itself well to speed or power shifting, it just isn't that kind of bike, so slower positive shifting always works better. Hope this helps.
